When I took dance as a kid, the girls often laughed nervously to themselves when the guys came out in their tights. "It's so big," I'd often hear.

Of course, they were not talking about me, they laughed to themselves about me, too, but it wasn't accompanied excited comments about how big I was, it was about how small I was.

I fantasized about the day one of the girls would get hurt and they'd need someone to fill in on short notice, that would be the day my lack of size would be an asset, not something they'd laugh about, something they'd be grateful for.
